City of Vancouver’s 125th Anniversary Celebration
Art & Heritage Walking Tours in the Gardens of Mole Hill

August 20, 2011 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm In honour of the City of Vancouver’s 125th Anniversary, a community celebration of the arts in one of the Vancouver’s most famous heritage landmarks is going to take place this August 2011.
This West End community arts festival will take place at Mole Hill on August 20, 2011 and will feature the visual, literary, and performing artistic works of tenants who live at Mole Hill, as well as others in the City of Vancouver.
The works of artists, artisans, photographers, writers, musicians, and performers will be set up at the various venues at Mole Hill – in the gardens, laneway/greenway, and in the Community Room. A selection process will take place after the call for submission so that a broad spectrum of participants, representative of a diverse community will be selected to participate.
Docents in period costumes from the Vancouver Heritage Foundation will provide heritage walking tours of the Mole hill site, which is made up of 28 restored Victorian and Edwardian heritage houses that form a city block in the West End of Vancouver, bound by Bute, Pendrell, Thurlow, and Comox Streets.
Prior to the date of the event, workshops will take place for the creation of community banners celebrating “What Community Means to me” that will hang in the laneway at Mole Hill when finished. All partners, including the children from the YMCA and other community groups will be invited to take part in the production of the banners.
It will be an opportunity for Mole Hill to publicly thank the City and others for ensuring the houses still stand as an important city landmark. Individuals who contributed to the success of Mole Hill and others who are involved today will be invited to speak and help to launch the event with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
