Mole Hill Closes Waitlist for Studio Apartments

Mole Hill will not be taking any new applications for studio apartments, as we have over 200 people on our wait list. We urge you to apply to the general wait list for housing at BC Housing (see below) and check back with us on a periodic basis. Remember, if you are currently on our wait list, you must call the office at 604-687-1145 to update every six months, or your name will be removed from the list. Thank you.

Vancity Community Project Grant – The Edible Lane Project

Mole Hill Community Housing Society was the lucky recipient of a Vancity Community Project Grant, which was used to provide landscaping upgrades and increase the edible plants in the laneway. New additions to the laneway include new “Duke” and “Blue Crop” blueberries, snowberries, saskatoon berries, huckleberries, strawberries and a variety of herbs. Goji berries and a persimmon tree will be planted in the spring.

We began this project by soliciting input from some of the tenants at Mole Hill who are involved in gardening. David Tracey, eco-urban landscaper attended on more than one occasion and joined a walkabout of the area, while hearing everyone’s concerns and ideas. David completed a comprehensive landscaping plan, compromised of an aerial view of the area, which he divided into numbered sections. Raegan Olmstead, an employee of Silent Gardener who provides landscaping services for Mole Hill augmented the plan by recommending specific plants for this year’s planting. Raegan and her crew started working on the area in mid-October, once we were assured the rainy season had begun.

In the spring, Spring Gillard, another fan of Mole Hill and a Vancouver composting expert will do a workshop for Mole Hill tenants, neighbours, and members of the West End Neighbourhood Food Network. Mole Hill is still considering the best composting system for the community and will purchase equipment after the training sessions are complete. Long-term goals are to build on the concept of a native, edible landscaping area while increasing the eco-urban approach. Investigating other gardening concepts such as green walls, roof-top gardening, enhancing natural irrigation systems, educational signage and other concepts are all being considered for on-going projects.

Mole Hill held a very successful AGM at Central Presbyterian Church on Thursday, October 27, 2011. Five new board members and three past directors were elected for a two year term. We would like to welcome:

Annual General Meeting – Thursday October 27, 2011

All members of the Mole Hill Community Housing Society are invited to the 2011 Annual General Meeting to be held on Thursday, October 27th. The business meeting will begin at 6:30 pm but join us for a “Meet and Greet” from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. There will also be an opportunity for existing members to renew their membership between 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm. Please note, the meeting will be held at the Central Presbyterian Church, 1155 Thurlow Street (Corner of Pendrell and Thurlow). Needed documents for the meeting can be found by opening the “members” link in the right hand column of the website. Please scroll down to the bottom of the page. Art & Heritage Walking Tours – Sean McEwan & Michael Kluckner

Learn about the history of Mole Hill from the early settlers, Elizabeth and Henry Mole, in the 19th century to the present day Society! Join Sean McEwan and Michael Kluckner as they take you on a walking tour around Mole Hill to talk about how the beautiful heritage homes came about.

The tours will be held at 10:00 am and again at 2:00 pm starting near the food station in the laneway. Check the map of the event to see exactly where it is.

Each artist and performer has been assigned a number and placed around the grounds of Mole Hill. Most will be inside the gardens in the common areas of houses displaying their works while some of the performers will roam the grounds. The Main Square will be where all the central entertainment will be located along with the information booth.

Art & Heritage Walking Tours – Banner Making Event

The banner making event, which happened last Saturday on July 23rd went very well!

Thank you to everyone who came out and painted!

We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day which gave us the opportunity to paint outside. The banner looks amazing and it will be hanging in the laneway on the day of the event on August 20th.
